How Can I Speed Up My Wix Website?

Updated: Jul 14, 2021

Site speed is an important aspect of your website for a visitor's overall experience & how well Google ranks you.

What is Site Speed?

Site speed is a measurement of how quickly your site fully loads after a visitor has requested access.

Improving the speed of your website is an important part of building and maintaining your website!

Test Your Site's Speed

In addition to the new site speed panel in your Wix dashboard, we recommend the following free sites to test your site's page speed.

Simply enter in your URL, click "start test," and learn what areas of your website could use improvement:

Things to Keep in Mind

Wix is a hosted platform. They take care of hosting your website on their servers, managing and updating the platform's code, and handling security. This is all provided for the monthly (or yearly) fee you pay to Wix.

This also means that you don't get full access to their code. There will be some recommendations these 3rd party testers make in their report that you will not be able to implement (modifying JavaScript, changing DOM size, reducing server response time, etc.)

It's important to keep this in mind because it will help you understand what changes you can make that will have an impact on your site's speed, and what you should prioritize when building & maintaining your website.

10 Tips to Speed Up Your Wix Website

  1. Images & Media - Uploading the highest quality version of the image is recommended. JPGs are preferred over PNGs where applicable & SVG is preferred over both, especially for logos. Check for extra large downloaded files ,avoid Gifs (use looping videos instead), and set your strip background colors to match background image colors.

  2. Turn On Caching - Once a page is cached, it loads more quickly for all subsequent visitors. From your Editor, click Menus & Pages > "Show More" > Settings > Advanced Settings > Change the toggle so it's set to Enabled.

    1. Note: Pages with custom code or dynamic code can be impacted by caching, so keep this in mind before enabling.

  3. Limit the Amount of 3rd Party Code - Facebook's Pixel, Google Analytics & any other 3rd party code that you add to your site has the potential to slow it down and impact the site's performance.

  4. Keep # of Fonts Down & Use Popular Fonts - We recommend 1-3 fonts for best possible results. Common fonts will already be cached in a user's browser, so your website won't have to load the font.

  5. Optimize Your Site for Mobile - Mobile devices aren't as fast as desktop (especially if you have a slower internet connection), so be sure to use the Wix mobile editor to make your site mobile-friendly.

  6. Minimize the # of Animations You Include - The more animations you apply, especially the reveal animation, the more time it will take to load. If you don't have a lot of content on your page, animations are okay to use.

  7. Don't Go Crazy with IFrames - An IFrame is a website that has been embedded within another site. These can slow down your website and even impact your Google ranking.

  8. Keep Your Header Clean - It can be tempting to include as much as possible in your header because it's the first thing that a visitor will see on your website, but fight this urge! Simple headers are better for engagement (because it's not overwhelming), and it will help your page speed.

  9. Limit the # of Apps You Add to Your Site - The more apps you include, the more code you're adding to your website, which can slow down your site's performance.

  10. Don't Obsess, but Prioritize! - We're sharing these resources with you to help you prioritize content, apps, custom code and plan the layout of your website. If you're unwilling to compromise on these things, your site's speed will be impacted.

    1. Note: Try to avoid obsessing over your site's speed score. It's important to have a balance between a great looking website that's easy to navigate & a site that loads quickly.

We hope you found these tips helpful as you work to improve your Wix website's page speed!
