As the owner of your business, you probably often feel a pull to do just about everything in your business.
You might start the day with a to-do list in mind, but before you know it, the day is over, and somehow you ended up doing a different set of tasks altogether.
We're now already into the second month of 2022, and if you're feeling like you need to tweak how you're doing things to make better use of your time, you're going to want to read this!
When setting your yearly goals consider:
What's the ideal future state of your business (in 1 year, 3 years & 5 years)?
What are the actionable steps you need to take to reach your goal?
What will it look like when you arrive at your goal? (It can be tempting to constantly move the goal post when you reach it, but it's important to celebrate the wins!)
These goals are what can help you shape the vision and mission of your business, and set your daily priorities.
When identifying what you should be spending your time on each day, consider:
What's urgent
What's important
What's significant
What can you do today that will have lasting value?
Think on these while you create your to-do lists each day. Then, before you start the next day, make a note of what you actually worked on. Keeping track of your time in writing will help you see where the time goes.
Before jumping into creating your next list, consider what you did the previous day that and ask yourself:
What inspired you?
What drained you?
Then, make a note of what you learned about your findings.
If you continue to find yourself stuck on tasks that are not bringing you closer to your goals, then it might be time to consider finding an employee, virtual assistant, or outsourcing that work.
Otherwise, before you know it, the year will be over, and you'll realize that you've been stuck doing work that prevented you from making significant progress.
Spend time on what brings you joy
We want to take a minute to talk about joy. Consciously spending time on things that bring you joy might be challenging for some business owners.
You tell yourself "I should be doing ___." Or, there are just so many things to do, I feel overwhelmed."
The fact is, there will always be another list. More to-do's have a way of finding you regardless of how fast you work, or how much of yourself you pour into your business.
Life is too short to spend it doing things that drain you and don't bring you joy.
Consider, how could you add more joy to your life? As business owners, we spend a lot of time working, so why not start there?
